Climate change is happening now, and people around the world are beginning to suffer. If the world’s temperature rises by more than 2°C, 30 million more people will go hungry, 50 million more African people will be exposed to malaria and between a fifth and three fifths of the global population will suffer from an acute water shortage.
World leaders are meeting in Copenhagen from 7th to 18th December to try to reach a deal on slashing emissions of greenhouse gases to stop climate change before it's too late. Britain needs to come to the table with strong actions to reduce our own emissions.
Cambridge Student Liberal Democrats want to see action in three key areas now:
1) Making all homes in Britain insulated and energy-efficient to cut emissions and energy bills.
2) A commitment to a 42% cut in UK carbon emissions by 2020 (rather than the 30% cut promised by the government).
3) Setting a target to generate 40% of Britain's electricity from renewables by 2020, and contributing to a global finance deal to help poorer countries invest in renewable power.
