We Want Devizes On The Railway Map
Created by Gareth Henshaw on 13/11/2009
Category: Transport
Region: Wiltshire
Target: Department Of Transport; Network Rail
This petition is to ask the Department of Transport, Network Rail and other associated bodies to strongly consider building a new station to serve the town of Devizes in Wiltshire.
We, the undersigned, believe that Devizes should have a station because:
1) Other smaller communities on the Berks & Hants railway (which runs past Devizes), such as Bedwyn, Pewsey and Kintbury already have stations to serve their communities - yet a large town like Devizes has no station to serve it. We feel this is wrong.
2) A station could be built at Urchfont, possibly called Devizes Parkway, and built from modular platforms with an overbridge. Modular platforms can be erected without having to shut down the line - an example is Llanharan station near Bridgend in South Wales.
3) A shuttle bus service could connect the station with the town and vice versa, therefore allowing access for commuters to London and helping the environment by reducing car dependence.
4) Devizes would be far enough away from any intermediate station, to not impact sufficiently on train speeds - although loops could be built to allow faster Intercity trains to pass through non-stop if necessary.
Please consider Devizes in your plans for future railway stations.
Thank You.
