Parents know that having children can be expensive, bills do not stop when you have a baby so why should your pay fall below national minimum wage?

I am due to go on maternity leave as my baby is due in March 2011. Im going to try and stay at work for as long as possible as I have a mortgage to pay. I currently earn over £1000 per month and the thought of living on £124 per week on statutory maternity pay makes me very uneasy. I cannot really possibly live on this kind of money. Its becuase of this I have to limit the amount of time I take off with my baby to six months and then go back to work and pay out for overpriced nursery. I have worked hard and paid tax for the last 4 years – this does not seem fair. My partner is also out of work having been made redundant. This sort of stress is not needed!

I have a 1-and-a-bit year old sister and I don’t believe it when she says that she ought to be going back to teaching.
