We, the undersigned, petition Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to change the current policy requiring both medication doses for Early Medical Abortion to be taken only in NHS approved medical facilities. Under current laws, women risk miscarrying while travelling home, often for long distances on public transport. The anxiety and danger they experience is unnecessary and maybe easily prevented with a change of policy.
The recent court ruling determined that the Health Secretary has the power to approve the second dose of treatment occurring at home. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the British Medical Association agree that this is international best practice.
We are confident that Mr Lansley will permit women seeking early medical abortion to self-administer treatment at home, ensuring that women receive the best possible standard of care.
