Petition to end Glasgow University’s contract with Eden Springs Ltd

We the undersigned note:
1. That Glasgow University water coolers are currently supplied by Eden Springs UK Ltd, of
which the parent company is Eden Springs Ltd aka Mayanot Eden.

2. That Mayanot Eden has, amongst its sources, the Salukia spring in the Golan Heights as
well as a bottling plant in Katzrin, an Israeli settlement also in the Golan Heights.

3. That the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights is in direct contravention of the United
Nations Security Council resolutions 242 (1967), 452 (1972), 465 (1980), 471 (1980) and
497 (1981).

4. That the UN General Assembly has adopted resolution 59/33 (‘The Syrian Golan’ 2005) by
111 votes to 6, stating “the illegality of the Israeli settlement construction and other activities in
the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967” and “the Israeli decision of 14 December 1981 to
impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan is null and void
and has no validity whatsoever, as confirmed by the Security Council in its resolution 497
(1981), and calls upon Israel to rescind it”.

5. That water is a natural resource essential to life and access to water is a basic human right,
as recognised by Amnesty International.

6. That exploitation of water sources in the Golan Heights breaches article 55 of the Hague Regulations, which limits the use of water sources by an occupying state to military needs not exceeding past use.

We the undersigned believe:
1. That the illegal appropriation of water for commercial use is particularly problematic
in the region, where water resources are scarce and distributed unequally.

2. That Eden Springs Ltd is therefore contributing to the violation of human rights and is
acting in violation of international law.

3. That the University of Glasgow has a responsibility to uphold an ethical buying policy.

4. That by purchasing water from Eden Springs UK, the University of Glasgow is complicit in the
above violations.

We the undersigned resolve:
1. To put pressure on the University of Glasgow to cancel its contract with Eden Springs UK Ltd
as soon as is legally possible.

2. To Mandate the Education and Ethics and Environment Officers to write to the
Principal on the issue, attaching a copy of this petition.

3. To mandate the Education and Ethics and Environment Officers to lobby, at all
available levels, against the purchase of water from Eden Springs Ltd.
