It’s very distressing to learn that Dr Bassett is the subject of a medical tribunal because he is alleged to have hastened the death of a lung cancer patient by administering more than the intended amount of diamorphine.
I speak as an ex-patient with first hand experience of Dr Bassett’s care and attention. He is without doubt the most caring, conscientious GP I have encountered in my 65 years, going to endless trouble to explain a diagnosis and to endeavour to put the patient’s mind, and those of their relatives, at ease.Nothing was ever too much trouble – he would take ‘phone calls between patients to discuss any immediate concerns, rather than one’s having to make an appointment a week on Thursday, for example, and made patients feel as if he had all the time in the world for them.
I fully understand that all such allegations have to be investigated, but I would ask that those of his patients who share my appreciation of Dr Bassett’s care and my faith in his integrity join me in offering a character reference, which I feel is the least we can do.
