Each year over 50,000 new mothers either lose or are forced out of their jobs due to maternity discrimination. Many are forced out through redundancies or have a change in job role, normally with diminished responsibilities. In 2015, the women and equalities committee demanded urgent action. They called on the government to publish a detailed two-year plan to address this inequality. The committee recommended changes in health and safety practices, preventing discriminatory redundancies and an increase in protection for casual, agency and zero-hours workers. A government response was published in january 2017 to review redundancies protection. One year later, and women are still facing maternity discrimination as the government have yet to review redundancies protection let alone make amends. We should aim to stop managers working around policies and making mothers feel undervalued and inadequate in the workplace; preventing unfair pregnancy and maternity discrimination and break the perception of women being less able, reliable or focused due to becoming a mother. Together we can reduce the number of females losing their jobs due to maternity discrimination by standing up for our rights and promoting an underrated issue.
