Human Rights

On 18th May 2010 gay Malawi couple – Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga – were convicted of gross indecency and unnatural acts by a Malawi court and now face up to 14 years in prison.
They were taken into custody after celebrating their engagement in December 2009.
They have been convicted simply because of who they love and taking a stand and celebrating their love for each other.
Steven and Tiwonge now face upto 14 years in prison, and already after 5 months in custody Steven is in ill health.
The Lesbian & Gay Foundation's Enough is Enough! Action Agaisnt Homophobia campaign is calling on you to sign this petition to the Foreign Secretary William Hague and the UK Government, to take action and urge the Malawi government to overturn Steven and Tiwonge's convictions.

Malawi have pledged to uphold the African Charter on human and peoples' rights and under the Malawi constitution, all citizens are guaranteed freedom from discrimination.
Now is the time for Malawi to be true to these pledges and overturn these convictions and decriminalise homosexuality.
The Court's decision, highlights the discrimination and injustice still facing, lesbian, gay and bisexual people around the world. Enough is Enough!
We must come together to highlight to all countries where homosexuality is still illegal and punishable by imprisonment, hard labour or the death penalty to realise that there actions are inhumane and must stop.
