The TFL website states that in 2012 there were 1,045 child pedestrian casualties on London’s roads and 20% of all casualties were younger than 16. Since then road safety campaigns have been introduced to help warn youngsters of the dangers they face from day to day traffic.

Although these are wonderful schemes nothing can replace the additional safety created by implementing specific phasing times with green men or lollipop men/ women to allow crossing time at busy junctions.

This is the problem we face at the junction of Stanstead Road, Cranston Road and Brockley Rise. Only one out of the four crossings have a green man in place and the phasing has been changed a number of times which is confusing and more importantly dangerous. This is a main route for many people including a number of children who travel to school every day, families and the elderly also use these crossings regularly to access shops, doctors, chemist.

We request that green men are installed at each crossing with specific phasing times to allow people to cross safely and in plenty of time, big enough areas at the central islands would also be safer as they are currently not very large and it is a struggle to fit a number of people including mothers with pushchairs on a central island at any one time.

As a community we feel this is absolutely necessary to ensure safer crossings for everyone. TFL state on their website that they want to encourage Londoners to walk more and that big steps are being made to make the Capital’s roads even safer for pedestrians, therefore the junction in question should most definitely be reviewed.
