Group B Streptococcus (group B strep) is a type of bacteria that causes illness in newborn babies, pregnant women, the elderly, and adults with other illnesses, such as diabetes or liver disease. Group B strep is the most common cause of life-threatening infections in newborns. How common is group B strep disease in newborns?
Answer: Group B strep is the most common cause of sepsis (blood infection) and meningitis (infection of the fluid and lining around the brain) in newborns. Group B strep is a frequent cause of newborn pneumonia and is more common than other, more well-known, newborn problems such as rubella, congenital syphilis, and spina bifida.About half of the cases of group B strep disease among newborns happen in the first week of life ("early-onset disease"), and most of these cases start a few hours after birth. Sepsis, pneumonia (infection in the lungs), and meningitis (infection of the fluid and lining around the brain) are the most common problems. Premature babies are more at risk of getting a group B strep infection, but most babies who become sick from group B strep are full-term.THIS INFECTION IS A KILLER IF NOT TREATED..TO PARENT AND CHILD. A routine screening test could save so much stress and heartache

Anything that can prevent needless deaths in babies should be a priority.

I myself had gbs and it wasn’t pleasent knowing that it could seriously harm your baby if you didn’t get to the hospital as soon as possible. My doctor said its all down to me to get yo the hospital in tine. They didn’t really explain it to me. I didn’t have a test forbit they were doing a different swap test and found it by themselves. If I did not have a swab done for different reasons then my baby could have been at serious harm they need to do this as a routine screening. It could save a Childs life. Please let it be a routine check!!!!!

I don’t like to see small children missing limbs through meningitis. I have four grandchildren who need protection from this horrible disease.

  6. Corinne Lucas

I hate to see children with missing limbs through a preventable disease. We have the means, use it instead of sending so much money to China, India and Argentina.
