On the 6th of february 2012 the uwe frenchay branch of natwest put a sign in the window notifying customers that the branch would be shut down on monday 30th of april 2012. UWESU mobilised immediately and within the first hour had over 250 students on facebook in support of the campaign to keep the bank open and cash points on campus . Contact was made with university management who have notified us that they have only found out in the last few days and the complaints/ head office team for natwest (rbs) who could not provide us with any further information at that time but promised to get back to us. In addition we have contacted the student union newspaper the western eye and bristol news who are both keen on running stories. Many students have expressed their concerns. at a time when students’ are facing increasing fees, raises in accomodation costs and travel in addition to the problems with student loans being paid late; it has never been more important to have access to a bank. Within the first 10 minutes of hearing this news i was contacted by a disabled student who expressed concerns around access. Withdrawing the branch from uwe frenchay will have a detremental effect on 1000s of students’ and staff at uwe and ulitmately affect the educational experience of students’ studying at uwe.
