The vale of glamorgan council is planning to radically reduce staff in four of our libraries in the vale. We want to:
say no to volunteer run libraries. The council has £40 million in reserves which should be used to safeguard the libraries at this present time
defend jobs. The mass job cuts and reductions in worker’s hours will lead to greater strain on the welfare system, hit the local economy hard and result in even more people seeking work in a sparse job market. Build a campaign for funding. The council is a labour council, yet they seem to be willing to wield the tory axe rather than stand up and demand the funding we need. We demand that the council do what they were elected to do and stand up for the interests of those they represent. The council propose offering these facilities to the community to be run by volunteers. This will mark the end of library facilities as we know it. The remaining libraries will function on reduced opening hours. Libraries are not just used to ‘borrow books’, for many they provide a access to the internet, and are a long standing local facility in educating the young and old, providing a valuable local service that we need to protect.
