As a driver, cyclist and motorcyclist, I have found it very difficult many times on rural country roads to see past the on coming vehicles lights, making me temporarily blind and traveling into darkness. The use of fog lamps is growing issue and its gaining pace as nobody is enforcing the law. Where are the traffic police/VOSA? The problem with cars with dazzling lights is awful when you cycle at night, the car behind the cyclist dazzling the oncoming car in front has lead to many near misses as they cant see me in the curb, even though I have 4 rear lamps and two front all turned on and a steady shine and reflective clothing, no flashing rubbish. The same when your on a motorcycle, if the car behind has bright lights the car waiting at a junction, uses the car as a reference and doesn’t see the biker in the foreground, really shortening my stopping distance.
The people who come up with these ideas need to ride/cycle UK roads and not just drive. Us 2 wheeled users don’t have the luxury of making mistakes like car drivers, we have to get it right first time as we have one life to live.

Hid lights are a danger to all road users,on country lanes it is almost impossible to recognise road verges, plus if oncoming car goes over the slightest undulation on the road, then it is as if on full beam.

I am amazed it has taken so long for somebody to hi-light the safety problem with these lights. I consider the lights are the biggest safety hazard on the roads today and I cannot believe the relevant road safety organisations have not brought this problem to the attention to the motor manufactures and government safety authorities. I think Jeremy Clarkson and team could do a great job of burying these lights once and for all.

Very distracting when followed by a vehicle fitted with them, and they seam to exagerate the problem caused by heigher vehicles, 4×4′s etc following lower cars.

The law states that headlights mustn’t dazzle, but we have manufacturers building headlights seemingly designed to do so. Why? Another case of ‘money talks (and buys political influence)’ probably. I agree with a previous comment that these ridiculously bright headlights completely obliterate tiny direction indicator lights. I wear spectacles and when purchasing the last two pairs my optician has recommended an anti-glare coating. Unfortunately this can only reduce the problem and not eliminate it completely. This in itself proves that there is a problem with these headlights, despite denials.

Completely blinded last night by big black Nissan in the outside lane where I needed to be to turn right at the roundabout, very dangerous. He switched lanes eventually and went straight across thank goodness. Hoped these xenon lights were no longer being fitted but it looks like they’re still about. Worrying that they are allowed??

I’ve just been followed for about 15 miles by another vehicle who I thought was flashing his main beams at me every few seconds. I soon realised that the “flashes” were happening each time he went over a bump in the road. I’m sure this was an effect of hard-focussed HID lights or self-levelling lights. This was a distraction and somewhat dazzling. It could have been absolutely deadly had an oncoming vehicle encountered. Regardless of HighWay code 110 (only flash to let others know you;re there), british motorists do have a silly habit of “flashing people out” of junctions. One of these days that vehicle behind me is going to be misinterpreted as flashing someone out and there’ll be an ensuing collision.

The problems with these headlights is getting progressively worse – as more manufacturers are adding them the number of dangerous cars on the road is increasing. This has to be curtailed by legislation and enforcement from the police and the MOT.

I find it really difficult to see the road ahead when I’m being dazzled by these lights, and I suffer discomfort when emergency vehicle’s flashing red & blue lights are in use also. I am only in my early 40′s, I have no issues with my vision as far as I am aware and it does worry me that these lights could be harmful to my eyesight.

I have noticed an increasing number of car headlights dazzle me when approaching me:
- in opposite direction
(stop me seeing the road and other road users) initially I’d assumed that it was defective lights – then started making a note of the car types – BMW, Audi and Land Rover and Mercedes.
- cars approaching from behind
occasionally light up the inside of the car and rear view mirror – so are too close or are simply high vehicles but also include the same brands.
I Guess MOT tests should pick such faults (after 3 years on the road??).

Not only are the headlights bright but to make matters worse, people also use fog lamps like normal headlights.
One of my pet hates is too dangerously bright traffic lights. What is the point ???
